Summer wanderings to Haida Gwaii

The last two weeks in July seemed the perfect period to travel to northern BC.  It was the first time in many years that we had used the Boler, and we had high hopes that it would fit our need.

The trip across northern BC following highway 16, with stops at McBride - other wise known as the mosquito capital of BC.  I learned very quickly how to level the trailer without disconnecting it from the Rav4.  After a night of swatting, we continued onto Burns Lake.

The views were spectacular - seeing mountains and remnants of glaciers, mountain sheep, mountain goats, and black bear.  We did not get to see the sun much during the two weeks, so we took advantage of it when we could.

The receding glaciers were evident along the highway.

And the Skeena River cutting it way to the sea

2 1/2 days on the road brought us to Prince Rupert, a sleepy fishing village / starting point for the Ferry.
The ticket for 2 adults and our vehicle/trailer for the 6 hour ferry ride to Skedigate (Haida Gwaii) was approximately $900 cdn.  It is no wonder the islands are not a tourist haven.

Prince Rupert is a small town,  and as we had the afternoon to wander around, we took the opportunity to explore.   A couple of hours was all that was required.

The town did have one great positive - the museum of northern BC.  A number of artifacts in the museum caught my eye.  Examples included:
Totem poles

Hats

The frog

masks
drums

We were ready for the ferry ride.
