Baja California Sur Chapter 2 Cabos San Lucas

Cabos San Lucas is built around a harbour right at the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California, with this bridge being the last major defining land feature.  The rocky surfaces adjacent to lovers beach (next photo) create ideal fish habitat.  Water conditions immediately west of this point, in the Pacific Ocean are significantly more treacherous.  This photo looks west.

While tourists often flock to lover's beach, another type of flock held sway there during our visit.  THe weather had cooled off somewhat, with overcast skies, making tanning some what more challenging.  Here brown pelicans share the beach with gulls.

Our guide called the ubiquitous pelicans "mexican turkeys.

This pelican appeared to be disgusted with the antics of the sea lions.

Rounding the tip we could see how rugged this point was.

This fellow caught my eye as he lounged on the southern most piece of rock.

It must have been a big shark that motivated him to climb this outcrop.  I am not sure I could have gotten up  there.

As we circled the point, we found more pelicans watching the fun.

Over the week I watched many pelicans fly just off the surface, periodically rising to a height of 20-30m and diving back down after the fish.

View to the Pacific

This cave was adjacent to Lovers beach.  If you look to the right of the opening, the rock is shaped somewhat like a hitchhiker.

Just as we were turning around, 5 or 6 boats had chased a humpback whale to our location.  If there are guidelines imposed on the tour guides for proximity to the whales, it was clear that they were not being followed.   Just caught this fluke as he decided he had had enough.

Back in the harbour we were greeted by the gang of pelicans.

It was clear that this harbour was a centre for wealth.  There were a number of large boats similar to this craft.  This one had a helicopter on its stern deck.

The harbour

Looking from the harbour mall.   The mall had a number of high end retail stores selling Rolexs etc.

Of coarse with a guard.

As we were leaving the area I spotted this heron lurking at the water's edge.

Not sure if he was after the small fish hiding in the water or the numerous crabs.

Parting shot near the mall.
