Flying high on Canada Day - Lake Louise to Calgary

Setting the stage, George and I are flying at 8500 ft along a loop between Calgary and Lake Louise in  piper cub.  The photos pick up as we leave Lake Louise.  Note that the 8500 ft is approximately equal to the height of the peaks of the mountains we are avoiding.  As the afternoon wore on, we were subjected to a small amount of buffeting as the warmed air rose above the valleys.  This did not impact the incredible view in any way.

After leaving Lake Louise, we headed north East to clear the mountains.

Heading into the foothills, ridge walks abounded.  I will need to visit them on foot at another time.

An alpine lake can be seen in the bowl created.  Ice water is not great for swimming.

Erosion creates great shapes.

A special camp site for George.  A great spot to propose.

As the afternoon wore on, the haze became more evident.

Back in the city the Canada Day Celebrations were in full bloom.

Concert on Prince's Island

Haysboro

Just before we landed, this "art deco" stagger wing cruised in.  Beautiful plane.

  1. Oh sorry - one correction. We are in a Piper Archer II, not a Cub. In a cub we'd have gone a lot slower, and you'd have been sitting behind me. :)

  2. And my earlier comment got lost... just some more info for you here:

The valley in the seventh photo is the Red Deer River Valley, we're just a little downstream from the source. The photo is looking mostly north before the valley turns east, and the river exits the park into Ya Ha Tinda.

The falls are "Big Horn Falls", in the Ya Ha Tinda valley.

Over Calgary we are at an altitude of 5500 feet, which establishes us roughly 2000 feet above ground level.

And that is a gorgeous (and locally owned) example of a Beech Staggerwing.

Glad you could make it out, that was a fun trip!
