Elbow Falls February meanderings

12 deg. C, blue sky, everything needed for a quiet walk along the Elbow River and Falls.  A bit of fresh air and exercise exactly what was needed to clear my head.

The locket provides a great vantage point to view the valley

I had not noticed the ice build up under the falls previously.  A closer look showed "ice teeth" had developed.

Chaos

and eddies.

A view to the west.  The trees had been scoured from the banks during the floods a few years ago.  Debris can still be seen.

Snow and rocks make for dimpled topography.

Natural vantage points are also present.

Of coarse, the Elbow River originates in the Rockies.

Lichens waiting for a protracted thaw.

More evidence of the floods.

Beaver dams dot the river.

And with the dams come wild life.  I watched this bird dive repeatedly for either snails or insect larvae.  I was carrying the wrong sense to actually see what it was eating.

A parting shot of the Rockies as I headed back to Calgary.
