Terrace BC and north to Lake Kitsumkalum - Chris' photos added

Sentinel

A spring break, but breaking the mould instead of heading to southern climes, I headed north to Terrace BC - just south of Alaska.  The route taken passed through the Columbia Icefields, Jasper and Prince George. The ambient conditions hovered around 1C, with snow coming and going.  Interestingly, the temperatures improved to 11-14C as I moved north.  I had not anticipated the tempering effect of the Pacific Ocean.

Ice fog after leaving Jasper.

Once I met up with Chris Mortimer in Terrace BC, and after staying a night with his friends, we headed north to camp on the shores of Lake Kitsumkalum.  Conditions for spring camping were ideal. low teens, dropping to 0 ish overnight.  No wind nor rain in our immediate vicinity.

This bald eagle watched over our campsite.

While I slept in my tent, Chris created a lean to using the canoe, rope, and a tarp.  One night he heated a rock, which was then placed into his sleeping bag to act as a heat source for the night.

The sand bar, created by the river adjacent to our camp site, extended more than halfway across the lake.

The great blue Heron had taken up residence at the end of the sand bar near our camp site.  Once bored with the lack of fish and frogs, he moved to a slightly more elevated post.

I noticed this fine fellow (Western Toad) on our second day.
We saw signs and heard moose around our camp.

I can only hope I have this much character once I reach its age.

Meditation

The squall did not cross the lake.

The wind caused the grasses to dance, evidenced by the circular trail around all patches.

We found this wolf skeleton on the lake.

A day trip to the next lake heading north (Ksi Sii Aks) offered more vistas of mountains and as seen below shells.  These believed to be 308 caliber, were also accompanied by 22s.

First light over the mountains in the morning

Frost was evident on all surfaces.

ok, maybe meditation again..

I sat down shortly after this photo was taken and soon was slumbering along side of Chris.  Kept the bears away.

21 May 2015 I received a block of photos from Chris taken during the same trip.  Thanks again Chris.

Setting up for a photo.

Chris' lean to.

the wolf from a closer perspective.  I was too heavy to walk in the mud around the carcass.

We found this old abandoned VW beetle along a trail beside the lake.

Who could pass up the photo op?

Chris stayed behind after I left as he had to complete the house renovation.  He took the opportunity to revisit the docks.

This unlucky fellow almost looks like a cartoon character.
